SIGNALS & TELECOMMUNICATIONS

Heritage skills. A connected railway.

Meet the department behind the signals and communications along the line.

Sheffield Park signal box

A working heritage,
cared for every day.

S&T brings together the craft of mechanical signalling and the technology of railway communications.

Our work supports the railway’s operating teams. It ranges from maintaining signals and points equipment to looking after the communications that link stations, signal boxes and departments.

We work within the railway’s procedures and competence arrangements. Volunteers develop their skills through appropriate training, supervision and experience.

01 / SIGNALLING

Every connection matters.

Mechanical signals, rodding, wire runs, points equipment and lever frames form part of an interconnected system. Our department helps maintain and restore these assets, preserving the character of a heritage railway while supporting dependable operation.

02 / TELECOMMUNICATIONS

Keeping people in touch.

Railway communications connect people across stations and departments. The team cares for telephones, cabling and associated infrastructure, investigates faults and supports improvements to the railway’s communications.

03 / MAINTENANCE & RESTORATION

Skills worth passing on.

Inspection, preventive maintenance, repair and restoration all have a part to play. Practical skills sit alongside record keeping, planning and careful teamwork. Members can find current work arrangements in the members’ area.
